Why GIFs are so big, and how to keep yours small

GIF stores every frame as a full indexed image with no modern inter-frame compression, and it caps each frame at 256 colors. That is why a 3 MB video clip can come back as a 15 MB GIF, and why no converter can fully fix it.

Frame rate is your biggest lever. Flippy's small preset runs at 10 fps, medium at 12, large at 15: for memes and reactions, 10 to 12 fps reads perfectly smooth while storing a fraction of the frames.

Past roughly ten seconds, a GIF stops being the right tool. A short silent MP4 or WEBM looks better, weighs about a tenth as much, and autoplays on every modern platform. Our converter does that flip too.
