How to resize a MP4 video

  1. 1

Drop in the video that is bigger than it needs to be.

  2. 2

Pick a target height. 720p is the sharing sweet spot, and the width follows automatically so nothing gets squished.

  3. 3

Hit Resize it and download the smaller file with its aspect ratio intact and the audio untouched.

Why resize it here

Aspect ratio handled

Pick a height and the width follows the original proportions, rounded to codec-friendly even pixels. Nothing gets squished or cropped.

Audio passes straight through

Only the picture is scaled and re-encoded. The soundtrack is stream-copied bit for bit, so it stays exactly as recorded.

Honest about upscaling

Flippy only scales down. Upscaling cannot invent detail that was never captured; it just makes a blurrier file with a bigger number on it.

No watermark, no signup

Free for everyday use, and both files delete themselves from our servers within an hour.

What resolution really does to file size

Pixels are what bits get spent on. Dropping 1080p to 720p removes 56% of the pixels in every frame; 1080p to 480p removes 80%. The savings in megabytes are large but not perfectly proportional, because the encoder also spends bits on motion and detail.

The width is computed from your chosen height and rounded to an even number because video codecs work in 2-pixel blocks. It sounds pedantic, but it is the difference between a file every player accepts and one that errors out halfway through an upload.

If a platform will show your video small, resizing before upload beats letting the platform do it: you control the scaler and the upload finishes sooner. But if someone asks for 1080p and you have 720p, send the 720p: an upscale would only look worse.

Questions people ask

Will resizing distort my video?

No. We scale to your chosen height and let the width follow the original aspect ratio, so nothing gets squished or cropped.

Can you make a video bigger?

We only scale down. Upscaling can't invent detail that was never captured; it just makes a blurrier, bigger file, and we'd rather not sell you that.
